A circuit around Harlow (45 km / 28 miles), the River Stort Navigation is followed to Sawbridgeworth from where the villages of Sheering, Matching, Magdalen Laver and Epping Green are visited. A relatively low level walk, never more than 400ft above sea level, and only 1200ft of ascent Rye House to SawbridgeworthSunday 5 August 2012 - 9 MilesID05082012#42 On way back from me mams, so wanted to get one last walk in. On the way down to Liverpool Street it started pouring down, but after a lengthy change at Stratford (because the Olympics crowds cause havoc trying to negotiate the station and buy a ticket) it had become sunny, and after change of train I found myself at Rye House, doing a walk that would be a stroll down memory lane as I have family in Sawbridgeworth and also know Harlow. I could have started at Roydon, but it was more meaningful to start at Rye House and follow the navigation all the way, from its junction with the Lea, soon branching off onto the Stort and passing the junction where the loop of the Stort Valley Way joins (this path is also shared in part with the Harcamlow and Three Forests Way) soon passing by Roydon, where I had a lovely rest by the lock, then along to Harlow, walking near the A414, passing by the 60's station at Harlow Town (much as I remember it in the early 1980's) and thankfully not passing through any urban bits on the way to Harlow Mill, then eventually along to Sawbridgeworth Station, where I peeled off and had an hour at my Aunts being fed and watered, before returing to the station and heading home. The walk was much more rural in feel than I was expecting and it was a real treat. The loop section will be of a different character, as it is away from the navigation to pass through varied countryside, and I look forward to completing it. The navigation itself carries on to Bishops Stortford, another 5 Miles which I will have to complete in the future Leaving the Lea for the Stort near Rye House Crossing the weir One of the nice little locks near Roydon Waymark at Junction of Stort Valley way where it leaves the towpath Sweet critters making little 'cheep' noises ...
