Named after the series of steep-sided hills, the Hampshire Hangers, the route is through wooded and grassed areas and the village of Selborne, home of past naturalist Gilbert White, to Queen Elizabeth Country Park, where it meets with the South Downs Way National Trail, and links to the Staunton Way which proceeds to the coast at Langstone Harbour. Petersfield to QE Country ParkSaturday 19 September 2009 - 4.5 MilesID19092009#29a Well, about bloody time! OK, this is just a little bit of the Hangers, but as Petersfield is a really good place to get too by train, and the main aim was to do the Staunton Way, this at least sets me up to finish the Hangers in one lump in the future. Had trouble ejecting carcass from a good kippy, but finally rolled into Petersfield around 1200. First stop get some clip on shades as the day was excrutiatingly bright and rather humid to boot. Six years since last visit to Petersfield, doing the South Downs Way. Quite pretty once out of town, through a mobile home park and through the bottom of a small valley (badly waymarked) and then a nice walk along the top of a hanger (steep sided valley) before coming down into Buriton. Past the duck pond, under the railway and a climb to join the South Downs Way (an old friend!) Another rise, then flat paths through Queen Elizabeth Country Park to end the Hangers at the visitors centre with a well deserved can of coke and Mars bar. The second of today's walks was along the Staunton Way Post just outside Petersfield Hanger (no not for planes!) near Buriton Attractive duck pond and village - Buriton Blimey - waymarker heaven or hell? QECP 'All Trails Start Here' QECP Visitor Centre. Goodbye Hangers, now for the Staunton (after some R&R) |
