A rail trail located in Scotland, UK. The path is approximately 15 miles (24 km) long and follows the route of the former Bathgate and Coatbridge Railway between Airdrie, North Lanarkshire and Bathgate, West Lothian. It forms part of National Cycle Network Route 75 which runs from Clyde to Forth. It is also known as Hillend Reservoir Path. This is now temporarily closed while the railway is rebuilt on the original trackbed and cycle path will be realigned. When complete, the railway will form a resurrected link between Glasgow and Edinburgh - why can't they do the same in England? Livingston to DrumgellochWednesday 8 July 2008 - 18 MilesID08072008#24 Me and my Dad (stuff the posh talk!) decided to take this one on, as the path was imminently being closed for (good) reasons above. I was riding a borrowed teenagers bike and my father is not a regular cyclist, but it wasn't that taxing, and it was great arriving in Drumgelloch (the current terminus) and getting the train into Glasgow and walking between Queen Street and Central. I don't see much of Glasgow, mostly Edinburgh when visiting. We then put out bikes on the train to Livingston South. Quite appropriate really - a boiler on an old railway line! Map innit Dad has trouble with the mobile blower near Bathgate Some sculpture to keep the punters amused Bridge a bit fluxed - parapet and trackbed nead a bit of attention here Looks like the Flintstones dumped their ride here... Speeding through the remains of Blackridge Station Hillend Reservoir - soon to be a nice view from a train window again Follow the tarmac I suppose The trackbed is compromised in areas - it should be up on the right hand embankment Drumgelloch. Shortly after this a nurse was kidnapped and left in a car boot near the station - as you do... |
